Facts About Sexual Harassment

Sexual offenses are crimes that have existed throughout history. It is, therefore, surprising that sexual offense research is still in its infancy and that it doesn’t deserve the time and effort it really needs. Sexual offenders are the most heterogeneous group of all criminology and investigators as well as researchers have come to learn about them by coming into contact with the victims rather than the offenders themselves.

While many sexual assault cases remain unresolved or even unreported, there are still remaining facts:

  • It is known that two-thirds of the victims are under the age of 18
  • Out of those, 58 percent, or four in ten, are 12 years or younger
  • In cases of child rape, the child almost always knows the offender
  • Among 18 to 29 year old victims, two-thirds have had a prior relationship
  • The offender is male, generally in his early 30’s and more likely to be white

  Did You Know?

The single-parent family is more vulnerable.

In most single-parent families, the parent works a regular full time job and is only available for a limited period of time. In addition to the full time job, there is the household and all the other miscellaneous chores a parent has to master. Due to the lack of time, the child is not receiving the psychological support it needs. Child molesters, who are very much aware of the situation, take advantage and take on the role of the caring friend. The child will develop a deep trust towards the caring attention provider in order to compensate for lost time with mom and dad.
